Julie Mayo and Kathryn Conolly have been the closest of friends since their schooldays…
So when each girl finds herself in a spot of trouble, it’s only natural they should turn to each other in confidence, their letters winging their way around the world and offering reassurance that they are not alone.
But when one girl is found brutally murdered in a luxurious country house hotel, and the other goes missing, it seems that their friendship, and correspondence, might be hiding a deadly secret.
Although desperate to be involved, Superintendent Gil Mayo is excluded from the case because Julie is his daughter.
Unable to officially take charge of what might be the most important investigation of his career, Mayo begins his own unofficial inquiry, aided by regular updates from Inspector Abigail Moon, who carries on with the murder investigation.
The two officers, in their individual investigations, discover that Kat seems to have been playing dangerous games with powerful people — and it is possible that Julie became deeply involved.
What’s more, there is also reason to believe that the murdered girl was mistaken for her childhood friend.
The murder inquiry centres not only on Kat’s colourful and complex love life, but also delves into the past.
In the process, local people are drawn into the case, their success and importance making them anxious about the past indiscretions that are inevitably coming to light.
Who was the intended victim?
And, more importantly, where is the missing girl now?
It is imperative that she be found — not only for the help she might offer for solving the case, but for her own protection.
The Superintendent’s Daughter is a complex and intriguing crime thriller, filled with mystery and suspense.

This is a well written and plotted novel.Since this is my first Superintendent Mayo book, I cannot speak to the paucity of personal information given about the main characters, but only assume that such facts were given in previous stories.
Cat Connolly is found murdered in a hotel. Since she had registered as Julie Mayo, Superintendent Mayo is excluded from the case until it is discovered why she did so. In comes a Super from another district who is very capable but not well liked.
What follows is a very detailed and painstaking investigation into Kat's murder. Following clues, interviewing witnesses and forming hypotheses the detectives delve into Kat's life and death.
The murderer came as no surprise to me, for I had them pegged from the beginning. Nonetheless, it was good reading getting to the conclusion. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next book in the series.

The Superintendent Daughter Inspector Gil Mayo Mystery Series Book 11 Marjorie Eccles Books Reviews
I'm quite a fan of British Police Procedurals; however, this is the first book I've read in the Gil Mayo series. Other than his daughter disappearing there doesn't seem to be a lot of exciting things happening in Gil Mayo's life. In fact the town itself seems a bit on the dull side. It's hard to get worked up about the rather pedestrian antics and cardboard cut-out family dysfunctions that resulted in the death of a young girl-- the mystery is very guessable.
This book is probably ok if there isn't anything else new on the shelf from a better writer.
As a lover of classic British police procedural I've read some of Mrs. Eccles previous novels. There is something so quaint and of times bygone about this genre. Unfortunately, as time goes by these book became somewhat dated. Some exceptional writers like Peter Lovesey, Ruth Rendell or Robert Barnard managed to transcend the genre to a whole different level, but Ms. Eccles's books are just not witty or original enough to stand out.
Kat Conolly is determined to spend as much time with her dying father as possible as they both reside at the luxurious home of her dad's business partner, Max Fisher. Kat turns to her best friend Julie Mayo for solace even though they are an ocean apart. However, not long after her father dies, Kat is found butchered to death in a hotel room.
Normally, Lavenstock Police Division Headquarters Detective Superintendent Gil Mayo would head up the homicide investigation. However, this inquiry has a personal interest for Gil as the murdered Kat checked into the hotel using his missing daughter Julie's identity. Led by a "disinterested" outsider, the police search for the killer while Mayo frantically looks for his missing daughter who seems to have vanished.
Marjorie Eccles has written the classic British police procedural starring secondary characters from previous Gil Mayo tales. This provides the book with an aura of continuity rarely seen in a series while also comforting the reader with familiar friends. The puzzling mystery is difficult to solve because the killer blends into the scenery so well. THE SUPERINTENDENT'S DAUGHTER is a fascinating novel that deservedly will bring new fans to the talented Ms. Eccles.

This installment of the Gil Mayo series brings murder close to home for Detective Superintendent Gil Mayo. One of his daughter's best friends is found savagely murdered in a local hotel. At the same time, Mayo has not heard from his wandering daughter, Julia, for some time, and he becomes very worried when he finds she is not in Texas as he expected.
The mystery doesn't revolve much around Julia's disappearance, but focuses on the family and friends of the murdered daughter as suspects, as would be expected. The plot development is deft as it often is with Eccles' books in this series. I found the story engrossing. The writing is up to par for Eccles, a very competent author, if not well known, in the British/Scottish mystery and police procedural genre.
In many of the previous books in the series, Eccles puts more effort into developing the characters related to the plot than those of her continuing series characters. But in this book the author does more to bring the reader into Mayo's personal life and his living arrangements with his girlfriend, and we get a little deeper into Inspector Abigail Moon's mind with regard to her boyfriend and her desire to head up a big case all by herself. The rest of the CID staff members have their usual bit parts, and Eccles keeps them nicely in character.
This is another pretty good entry in a series worth reading.

Many thanks to the author / Endeavour Press / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Superintendent Gil Mayo involved in a very personal investigation. His daughter's best friend has been brutally murdered, and his daughter has disappeared.
The victim is found murdered in a hotel room .. and she had registered as Julie Mayo, the Superintendent's daughter.
This book was released in 1999, so there is little in the way of forensics, smart phones, DNA testing was still in it's early stages and not accepted by everyone in law enforcement. Good old fashioned and diligent police work is what is required.
There is mystery and suspense, several credible suspects, and a story line that is engaging. Most of the story encircles the murder, her friends, her family.
This is a well written police procedural, if just a tad dated.
The story is one that will keep you on your toes for certain. I did tend to find that the characterization was not of the caliber which I prefer. It was a task, in my opinion, to try to maintain the various people and their connections. Overall an okay read.
This is a well written and plotted novel.
